A private transfer from Ohrid to Sofia Airport (SOF) covers about 420 km and takes roughly 5 hours 45 minutes, running through Skopje and across the border at Deve Bair, then east through the Bulgarian mountains to the terminal.
Sofia has the widest year-round flight choice of any airport within driving distance of Ohrid, which makes it the common winter departure once the seasonal flights from Ohrid stop. We collect you from your address around the lake and drop you at departures with time in hand.
How much is a transfer from Ohrid to Sofia Airport?
This is a cross-border long-distance run rather than one of our published airport fares, so we quote it per journey. Send us the date, the flight time and the number of passengers and you get a written price for the whole car, fixed before you travel.
The quote covers the whole vehicle, luggage, motorway tolls on both sides, the vignette and every border fee. You pay the driver at the end of the ride and nothing is added on arrival.
- Quoted per journey
- Written price for the whole car, up to 4 passengers, fixed once you confirm
- Night departure
- Early starts between 23:00 and 06:00 are priced with the journey rather than as a flat surcharge
- Payment
- Cash to the driver in euros or denars. Cross-border transfers are usually quoted in EUR. Confirm the currency when you book
The price is for the car, not the seat, so four people travelling together pay it once. Larger groups are quoted as a minivan or a second vehicle.
The route: Ohrid to Sofia through Skopje
The drive leaves Ohrid through Struga and Kicevo, joins the A2 to Skopje and continues past Kumanovo to the crossing at Deve Bair–Gyueshevo. On the Bulgarian side it is the A6 through Kyustendil and on to the Sofia ring road and the airport at Vrazhdebna.
It is the easiest of our long international routes to drive: one border, most of it dual carriageway, and no mountain passes once you are past Kyustendil.
- Every passenger must carry the travel documents their nationality requires. Passengers are responsible for checking current passport, ID and visa requirements with the official authorities before travel.
- Both North Macedonia and Bulgaria are outside the euro, but the fare is agreed before you travel so the exchange rate is not your problem.
- Check your own requirements with the IATA Travel Centre or the destination country’s official border authority.
- A slow border queue does not change the agreed price.
How long does the drive from Ohrid to Sofia take?
About 5 hours 45 minutes for the 420 km, allowing for the crossing at Deve Bair and a comfort stop. Traffic around Skopje at rush hour is the main variable; the border is usually quick outside summer weekends.
For a flight out of Sofia, leave Ohrid roughly 8 hours before take-off. That covers the drive, the border and check-in without rushing: send us the flight and we set the pickup time from it.
Sofia or Skopje: which airport should you fly from?
Skopje is much closer to the lake: 180 km against 420 km, and no border to cross. If the flights and fares are similar, Skopje wins every time: see the Skopje Airport transfer.
Sofia earns its place on flight choice. It is a far larger hub with year-round service across Europe, so in winter, or when a Skopje departure would need an awkward connection, driving to Sofia is often the faster door-to-door journey despite the extra 240 km.
Flying out of Ohrid Airport itself is simplest of all when the schedule suits: it is 10 km from town and 1,200 den. See all our airport routes, or the other international transfers.

Where we pick you up around Lake Ohrid
We collect you from your hotel, apartment or address in Ohrid town, the Old Town on the hill, the lakeside hotel strip or Struga: the quote is the same across the Ohrid area. Peštani, Trpejca, Sveti Naum and the villages further south are quoted with the same journey.
Enter the address in the booking form and add a map pin or a note if it is hard to find. The driver comes to the door at the time we agree, not to a rank in the centre, and calls ahead if you would rather be met outside.
